Common Myths About Chiropractic Care

Many people avoid the chiropractor because of things they have “heard” or just general uneasiness because they don’t know very much about Orlando FL chiropractic care. It’s good to be skeptical when making medical decisions as they can have serious consequences and may make whatever you’re experiencing worse. It’s important to do sufficient research and get all the facts before diving head-first into treatment. Research does not include asking unqualified individuals about what they’ve read on the internet and believing your aunt’s story about her hair dresser. It’s important to find verifiable information that comes from a source you can trust. This article isn’t meant to replace medical advice, but hopefully it can help guide you in your research. Below, some of the more common myths around chiropractic medicine will be discussed.

Myth 1: Orlando FL Chiropractic Care is Expensive

A 2010 study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, showed that patients suffering from low back pain spent 20% less money when care was initiated by a doctor of chiropractic. While it’s important to consult with your physician regarding care, it increases the likelihood of patients getting back surgery. The cost of the surgery and rehabilitation are much greater than the entire chiropractic treatment.

Myth 2: Chiropractic Care is Dangerous

Everyone has a story about how someone they know knows someone who was injured by Orlando FL chiropractic treatments. Perhaps the bad stories stick out more because the field is more specific and less understood than general medicine, but chiropractic care is much less invasive than many typical medical interventions. Surgery and other invasive interventions are quite traumatic for the body and can have unforeseen consequences. The American Chiropractic Association has looked into the risk of death from various surgeries and medications and determined that the risk of death is much higher with these treatments than with chiropractic sessions.

Myth 3: Chiropractic Care is Unsafe for Children

Actually, since children are generally more flexible, chiropractic care is even less likely to cause them harm. Research has actually shown that children as young as infants may be treated by chiropractors, though with a specific technique. Children are much more active than adults and are likely to sustain injuries that can affect their spinal health.

Myth 4: Chiropractors Aren’t Well-Trained

Most people think chiropractors one day decide to start a practice and that there isn’t much to it. In fact, most chiropractors go through the same rigorous undergraduate studies as physicians, and also have four or five additional years of training at an accredited chiropractic college. This includes at least 4,200 hours of study and clinical experience.

Myth 5: Once You Start You Can’t Stop

Though many people continue to seek Orlando FL chiropractic treatment because of how much better they feel, most treatments do have an end-date. Chiropractors will generate a specific treatment plan for each individual that comes to their clinic. This will include specific types of adjustments, physical therapy, and the number of treatments they think it will take. At times, the chiropractor may be slightly off in his or her estimate. Many individuals will continue to come in for check-ups and maintenance adjustments at a less frequent pace after their specific treatment has concluded.

Myth 6: Chiropractic Adjustments Hurt!

Most people are averse to pain. The last thing someone wants to do when they’re in pain is to layer more on top of it. Chiropractic adjustments should not be painful. There is often some discomfort at the exact moment of the adjustment due to the nature of the injury. Relief often comes swiftly after a session. Some people feel somewhat sore a day or two after, much like with a professional massage.

Myth 7: There’s No Proof it Chiropractic Care Works

There are many studies conducted in recent years showing that chiropractic care is indeed effective. A study by AVMed, the largest health maintenance organization in the Southeast, examined 100 patients seeking treatment at the Silverman Chiropractic Center. Of these patients, 80% had already sought other treatment without results. After receiving chiropractic treatment, 86% had their conditions resolved. This means no surgery, and none of the patients felt worse, even if they weren’t completely healed. There are many other studies that show chiropractic treatments can indeed resolve serious problems without dangerous intervention like surgery.
