What Can Be Causing Your Back Pain

Back pain is one of the most common reasons for people to take a leave of disability from work or school. Determining the cause of back pain can be very frustrating and mysterious. Though back pain can be completely debilitating and unbearably painful, it often is not caused by a serious underlying issue, which becomes another frustrating aspect. In many cases, the cause of the pain is never determined so it’s always best to consult with an experienced Orlando chiropractor to learn about the causes of your back pain.

Who Gets Back pain?

Back pain can affect anyone from any background, but it does appear in some people more than others. Adults aged between 35 and 55 years of age are significantly more likely to report pain in the neck and back. These are prime working years when the human body starts to have more problems than when the person was in their 20’s. Experts believe that back pain is connected to the interactions of bones, muscles and ligaments. When a body has experienced a significant amount of wear and tear and isn’t engaged in healthy exercise, this can affect the interconnectedness of the skeletal form. Caring for the spine and neck is very important for your overall health. If you have been experiencing any pain, contact an Orlando chiropractor immediately to seek the care you need.

Strain

The most common causes of back pain is strain to one of the aspects of the spine. This includes:

  • Strained muscles
  • Strained ligaments
  • Spasming muscles

Strains and spasms are caused by improper use of the muscles. This can occur in a single moment or over extended periods of time. Common causes of strains and spasms include:

  • Using improper form when lifting an object
  • Lifting an object that is too heavy for the strength of the muscles
  • Abrupt or awkward movements, especially when the back lacks flexibility
  • Extended periods of poor posture

Whatever may be the cause of your pain, it’s best to contact an Orlando chiropractor to learn about your options.

Structural Problems

The anatomy of the back is a complex structure of muscles, ligaments, tendons, discs, and bones. The spinal column is made up of interconnected individual blocks of bones that are cushioned by cartilage-like pads called discs. When a spine experiences excessive wear and tear, the discs between the bones can wear down, causing painful friction between the bones. An Orlando chiropractor can explain more about your options as it pertains to your case. The following structural problems may cause back pain:

  • Ruptured discs – This is when a tear in the outer section of the padding between vertebral bones (the disc) pushes the inner layer to leak out into the spinal column.
  • Sciatica – Sciatica is caused by a ruptured disc irritating a nerve in the lower back. Symptoms include sharp, shooting pain that travels down the buttocks and along the back of one or both legs.
  • Arthritis – Arthritis can affect the joints in the hips, lower back, knees and hands. Spinal stenosis can develop, which is when the space around the spinal cord narrows. This can be very painful.
  • Abnormal spinal curvature – A healthy spine has a slight curve forward at the top and outward toward the bottom. Some spines curve in an unnatural position, increasing the strain on the vertebrae and often resulting in back pain. Scoliosis is one condition in which the spine curves to the side.
  • Osteoporosis – As the human body ages, the bones become porous and brittle. This includes the bones of the spine, making compression fractures more likely. The spine endures quite a bit of compression as it helps carry the weight of our body, especially when sitting.
  • Cancer of the spine – If an individual has a tumor in their back, it may put pressure on the spine, resulting in pain. This can be quickly determined through imaging tests at the doctor’s office.
  • Spinal infection – If an individual is experiencing a fever as well as warmth and tenderness in an area of the back, this could be due to an infection of the spine.
  • Other infections – Pelvic inflammatory disease, bladder infections, and kidney infections can result in back pain.
  • Sleep disorders – Individuals who have sleep disorders are more likely to report back pain than the normal population. Perhaps this is because the body requires sleep to recover the daily strain placed on the back and spine.
  • Menstruation – Many women experience mild to severe lower back pain before or during their periods. This pain can range in severity and last several days.
  • Shingles – Shingles is an infection caused by the same virus as chickenpox, usually in older individuals. It often affects the nerves in the legs and back, resulting in a stinging, burning pain.

Diagnosis

While many causes for back pain aren’t life-threatening and may be treatable, it’s important to seek medical attention from an Orlando chiropractor as soon as possible to rule out anything more serious. There are many non-invasive steps that can be taken to decrease back pain, such as:

  • Chiropractic treatments
  • Physical therapy
  • Stretching
  • Improving posture

Be sure to take steps towards alleviating your back pain by ruling out anything serious and then considering, with the advice of your doctor, what treatments may help you.
